Brindille & Twig: The Pearl Jam Outfit

I’m back with more Brindille & Twig reviews. If you haven’t checked them out yet, you really need to. They have the best basic and modern baby/toddler/kid’s patterns out there. I’m addicted. I don’t think I make Nico patterns from any other pattern company, just B&T and whatever patterns I draft up. Side note: I have patterns I want to put out for free – can someone help me with this?! Email me if you can help 🙂

At the time of making this (March 2016) Nico was 14 months old and his measurements were: waist: 20″, chest: 20 1/2″, total height: 32 1/2″, inseam without diaper: ~13″, head: 18 1/4″. Let me add that these aren’t 100% exact, because measuring a moving toddler is not easy! The one I’m really unsure about is the inseam because he had on a diaper and was kicking while I made my husband hold his legs down for a measurement. According to Nico’s measurements he was kind of all over the place. All sizes I used are listed below

Nico’s entire outfit is made by me and is B&T. We’ll start with the shirt: the basic tee (sizes 0M to 6T). This is a basic t-shirt that goes with everything. I made size 12-18 months but used 18-24 months in length. My child happens to be very tall and skinny, so I typically add length to everything. The pattern does not come with a pocket, so I had to make my own. It turned out okay, but I should have put it a little bit higher. Oh well, still looks cute and I doubt anyone will ever notice! The shirt sews up super fast – from cutting to sewing I was finished in about 45 minutes, if that.

Next up are the pants. I had an old Pearl Jam concert tee that didn’t fit me anymore so I decided Nico needed to represent. The shirt was one of those baby doll shirts that really shouldn’t fit an adult because it was probably made for a 12 year old girl, ahh the early 2000’s. Gotta love that raver girl fashion. I actually have 2 of these shirts, one in yellow and one in black. I figured the yellow might be a bit too bold and as you know I’m obsessed with black and white.

For these I used B&T’s faux pocket pants (sizes 0M-6T). Can I just say I want a pair for myself? But with real pockets of course! I made size 9-12 months but 12-18 length. I didn’t make any other alterations. These are great for upcycling shirts as they have no seam in the back or front – just the sides. These have a nice slim fit to them. Super easy to sew, even with the faux pocket, once again it took me about 45 minutes. You can also leave off the pockets and just draw a straight line on the cutouts of the front pants pattern and have basic pants. I adore the pockets thought, they give a nice little pop and can tie in with the shirt so well.

Toddlers are funny little creatures. At the time of this photoshoot he was scared of grass, hence the crying and unhappy faces. Keep in mind, a week before that grass was just fine and fun to pull up and throw. But this day, nope, grass was apparently hot lava and he was not a happy camper! Don’t worry, he’s not longer afraid of grass – I saw him try to eat some the other day.

Lastly, his hat is B&T’s Slouch Beanie (sizes: Preemie – 6T). I made a size 12-18 in this one. No alternations needed. I love this hat and will be making my own (you know, someone day when I get time). It’s like a traditional beanie but much longer. He gets compliments on this hat all the time. This is actually the 4th one I’ve made (we’ve lost 2). They are reversible, which is great because 2 is better than 1! You’re supposed to push down the back a little for it to be slouchy, but with toddlers you’re just happy you got the thing on their head in the first place.

I can’t for the life of me remember where I got the stripe fabric, I’m thinking probably Girl Charlee. It’s been in my stash for over a year. I tend to save all the good stuff and never use it, like I’m scared to cut into it. With baby clothes it’s easier because they take such little fabric, so I still have a lot left over. I love this fabric, and I wish I would have gotten about 2 more yards. It’s a mid-weight jersey and has about 40% stretch. The black is from Joann and has about the same stretch.

I’ve been sewing a ton of stuff for Nico lately. Baby stuff sews up really quickly, so you can feel accomplished when you have little time. As much as I love how cute the store brand clothes are, I like to put him in “my style” clothing. I figure I can really only do this for a limited time because soon enough he will yell at me that he doesn’t want homemade clothing.

That’s it for now! Hope you liked the outfit and baby Nico pictures!
